Sean Hart’s Path From Pro Football (Soccer!) to Documentary Filmmaking

Sean Hart’s professional journey began on “the pitch” and wound its way through Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Australia before he landed in Silver Spring, Maryland. Born in Toronto and raised between Lyon (France) and Miami, he found early success in professional soccer. But, along the way, he always carried a camera.

The Footballer Who Always Carried a Camera 

“Photography was always a hobby,” he says. “Toward the end of my career, though, I faced the daunting question most athletes face: ‘What’s next?’ As an athlete, I had been blessed to do what I loved back then, and I realize I still get to do something I love. I’ve been blessed.” Six years ago, he turned the hobby into a full-fledged business and HARTISTRAW was born.

HARTISTRAW works in both photography and video, with documentary storytelling as its clear center of gravity.

“Everyone says you need to niche. For me, it’s documentary,” he explains. “We all have a persona we show the world, but everyone has an individual story. Photos and videos really capture that. I aim to bring out each subject’s uniqueness and likeness — and portray that through imagery.”

Photography was his first love. Video followed as clients’ needs and today’s attention spans pulled brands and community groups toward motion. Still, he insists, “Photos are timeless.”

What HARTISTRAW Offers the Local Business Community

Hart’s value proposition is simple and human: tell yor story in a way that is raw, real, and undeniably you.

That can mean founder portraits and brand films, coverage of community events, or long-form documentary projects for organizations. “I want to be involved with local Black businesses — creating, partnering, or collaborating with other creatives and entrepreneurs. Community is important. I’m interested in documenting stories that actually matter, not just shooting something for a paycheck.”

Asked what he considers “good” referrals, Hart doesn’t only name prospective clients. He’s also looking for peers.

“Other creatives,” he says. “People I can talk through challenges with, so we can overcome them together. Of course, I’d also like introductions to organizations and businesses that need documentary photo or video to help us help each other.” 

Hart works with a second shooter and a videographer, bringing in editors when projects stack up. He’s committed to opening doors for emerging artists. “If I need another shooter or can’t be there, and there’s someone in the community who wants a shot and needs to build a portfolio, I’m open arms. Come learn on the job.”

Like any working creative, Hart is focused on a healthy pipeline. “The next three to six months may be full, and I’m grateful. The question is always: what do the next six, the next twelve months look like? Having projects on the calendar that far out brings security. I’m working through this kind of challenge bit by bit, using my village. It’s working.”

Despite the need to grind, work–life balance is not a slogan for Hart; it’s a system. “I try to schedule work around my life. In Australia, people would jump in the water before work, at lunch, and before heading home. That’s a lifestyle. You still get the work done.”

Why Montgomery County, Why Now?

Though his life and work still take him to Toronto, Berlin, and Sydney, Hart has chosen Montgomery County as his home base and he’s “setting down roots” here.

Resources throughout the Montgomery County Black business ecosystem have helped him find collaborators and clients. “The MoCo Black Business Database has been a big resource,” he says. “I’ve found other Black businesses in the area I never would have known about. We can all help each other. A rising tide lifts all boats.”
