AFC Urgent Care Rockville

In May 2024, Dr. Adebayo Akindele and Dr. Nadine Peart Akindele opened the doors to their American Family Care (AFC) Urgent Care clinic in Rockville’s King Farm neighborhood. These experienced, board-certified physicians saw a pressing need for accessible, equitable healthcare in their community—and they decided to take action.

A Vision Born from Experience

Dr. Akindele, a family medicine physician, and Dr. Peart, a pediatrician and pediatric infectious disease specialist, each have firsthand knowledge of the challenges in the medical field. Both doctors have had experience as patients, and they have witnessed the significant gaps in equitable healthcare delivery. Not everyone receives the same level of care.

“Equity in healthcare isn’t just about treating everyone equally—it’s about meeting people where they are,” Dr. Peart said, explaining their point of view.

The pair’s mission is to provide high-quality, evidence-based medicine to everyone, regardless of insurance status or other barriers.

A Partnership with Purpose

Dr. Akindele and Dr. Peart are married to each other and have three young children. They chose to open their practice under the AFC franchise because, as Dr. Peart said, “AFC offered resources and a community of franchisees who guided us through the process.” This support allowed them to focus on their goal of designing personal and equitable patient care.

From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week—including holidays—the Rockville clinic ensures that patients can access care when they need it most. For those without insurance, Dr. Akindele and Dr. Peart offer options to ensure that no one is turned away, providing affordable rates tailored to the patient’s financial situation. “Equity in healthcare means meeting patients where they are,” Dr. Peart explained, emphasizing their commitment to low rates, particularly for uninsured individuals.

But Akindele and Peart’s commitment is not only to urgent care: AFC also offers a robust suite of preventive health services, from physical exams to onsite X-rays and lab testing. In 2025, they will add a variety of weight management programs to their list of services, further broadening the clinic’s offerings to meet community needs.

The Impact of Community and Connection

The King Farm neighborhood was a serendipitous choice for the AFC Urgent Care location and one that has proven to be ideal. The area has the elements of a close-knit community, and the partners have embraced their role as part of the local fabric. They have formed partnerships with organizations like the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation, the Greater Rockville Chamber of Commerce, and WorkSource Montgomery.

The practice sponsors initiatives like community yoga sessions and encourages donations to the Mansfield Kaseman Health Clinic, which provides quality, culturally appropriate healthcare services to Montgomery County adults who are medically underserved. In this way, AFC Rockville aims to extend its reach beyond the clinic’s walls. Their focus on connection is a central feature of their practice, whether they’re fostering relationships at local festivals or collaborating with nearby emergency rooms to ease overcrowding.

Looking Ahead

Although the practice is new, its foundation is solid. Between them they possess almost 20 years of combined medical experience—and backgrounds that include nursing, medical training in multiple countries, and a deep understanding of patient care. Now, in their own practice, the partners’ approach is holistic and strives to be compassionate.

“Our goal is to make sure everyone feels cared for,” said Dr. Akindele. “Whether it’s a child with a minor illness or someone navigating a complex diagnosis, we want to help them every step of the way.”

As AFC Urgent Care in Rockville continues to grow, Dr. Peart and Dr. Akindele remain focused on their mission: delivering accessible, equitable, and personalized healthcare.
